On Friday, June 3rd, Wrk took part in the Techaide Soccer Tournament for charity in Montreal’s Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard. 33 teams made up of different companies in the Montreal tech community participated. There were about 400 players in total. While we certainly aren’t all-star soccer players, we definitely had a lot of fun playing and were happy to give back to the local community in Montreal.
Charitable Impact
All proceeds from the Techaide Soccer Tournament went to Centraide du Grande Montreal, a local charity that supports 350 agencies that help people to overcome poverty and exclusion on a daily basis.
Giving back to a good cause
We were really proud to take part in this extremely worthwhile event and are happy to say that our team surpassed our goal of $1,500 in donations.
"When the opportunity to lead the Wrk team at TechAide came up, I was really excited," says Patrick Bourke, Content Manager at Wrk and our nominated team captain.
"The chance to raise some much-needed funds for an organization like Centraide that does such great work in the Montreal area was really exciting—and being able to get on the field with colleagues for the first time was an added bonus. I‚Äôm really glad we were able to contribute in some small part to TechAide 2022 and look forward to doing so again next year."
"For this third edition of the Techaide soccer tournament, $60,000 was raised by 33 teams to support Centraide of Greater Montreal in its fifth against poverty and social exclusion. Since our initial goal was $50,000, we are particularly pleased with the result," says Laurent Maisonnave, a Techaide Ambassador.
Gameplay with the Montreal tech community
For the Techaide Soccer Tournament, each team played 2 games in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, with each game clocking in at 16 minutes. Ultimately, though our team put in a valiant effort, Wrk didn’t make the playoffs with 1 win, 1 tie and 2 losses. But we had a lot of fun on the field and enjoyed coming together as a team for the day. Several team members from Montreal even came to support us from the sidelines.
"It was such a great event, and so nice to see all the different tech companies in Montreal stepping up for a good cause! Some familiar faces, and so many new faces, it was a great opportunity to see how far we’ve come as a city, and how much we are contributing to innovation and the future of tech," says Kalli Ringelberg, Senior Content Writer at Wrk.
Wrk on giving back to the local community
At Wrk, we think it’s important to give back to the local communities that support us. And given that we’re a remote-first team, we’re part of many different communities around the world.
In fact, June 3rd wasn’t just a day to come together for Techaide. We dedicated it as a Volunteer Day to give our team the opportunity to support their own communities. One team member volunteered at a fundraising event for his daughter’s basketball team while another volunteered with his local yoga studio, helping them with some seasonal cleaning and organizing for a summer fest in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to planning more days like this!
